90 seconds is all it needs to regulate an unpleasant emotion. In theory.
Myself and my clients often make a different experience. Last week a client told me: “By the time I've calmed down, the damage is already done." She had snapped in a meeting and regretted it for hours. In retrospect, the emotion itself was never the problem. It should have last around 90 seconds.
Though, her reaction to the emotion was the problem.
And that is what we’re gonna tackle today: The 90-Second Reset.

Let's start.

The 90 Seconds You Didn't Know You Had

Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor put a number on it: when an emotion fires,
the chemical rush through your body runs its course in about 90 seconds.
After that, the physiology is basically done. If you're still furious ten minutes later,
that's not the original wave. It's you re-triggering it, thought by thought.

The feeling has a short shelf life.
The story about the feeling doesn't.

Think about the last time something small set you off — an email,
a tone, a look across the table. The jolt itself was over in seconds!
But the reason it ruled the next two hours is that you kept picking it back up:
retelling it, rehearsing your side, drafting the comeback you'll never send.
Every retelling restarts the 90-second clock from zero.

For leaders, this tool is often where the journey for SELF-LEADERSHIP starts.
The reset buys you the one thing:

More space between the trigger and your response.

The NeuroScience Behind the 90-Second-Reset

  1. Adrenaline is short-lived. The surge of stress hormones behind an acute emotion floods and clears within minutes; adrenaline's half-life in the bloodstream is only a couple of minutes (Taylor, 2008, My Stroke of Insight).

  2. Rumination drives distress. Replaying the trigger keeps the loop firing; chronic rumination is one of the best-documented drivers of prolonged distress and low mood (Nolen-Hoeksema et al., 2008, Perspectives on Psychological Science).

  3. Naming it and slowing your breath hit the brakes. Putting a feeling into words measurably lowers activity in the amygdala, the brain's threat center (Lieberman et al., 2007, Psychological Science), and one long, deliberate exhale reliably drops physiological arousal (Balban et al., 2023, Cell Reports Medicine).

Key Takeaways

  • The wave of an emotion is short — often around 90 seconds.

  • What stretches it out is the story you keep retelling.

  • You can't stop the wave, but you don't have to feed it.

  • The reset is a skill: learnable in one breath!

How I Coach the 90-Second-Reset

#1: Start the clock.
The moment you feel the surge, tell yourself: "This is the 90 seconds."
Name the timer. Or use an actual timer.

#2: Exhale longer than you inhale.
One physiological sigh: two short inhales through the nose,
one long exhale through the mouth.
Do it before you say a word!

#3: Don't narrate.
Let the wave move through without the commentary ("how dare they…").
The sensation on its own is harmless. The story is what runs away.

Name the feeling in one plain word …
…like angry, hurt, embarrassed.
Stay with the word until the wave drops!

That's it for this Saturday.

The next edition comes out Saturday, the 12th of September 2026.

We'll continue with: "Active Love" — the counter-intuitive move
for the person who might be your TORMENTOR.

Own it!

Yours,
Moritz
